Uganda-specific rights and timelines

  • Access: the Data Protection and Privacy Act provides for access requests by a data subject who provides proof of identity. The Act states that, subject to its provisions, a controller should comply promptly and in any event within 30 days.
  • Correction/deletion: the 2021 Regulations provide a written request process for inaccurate, irrelevant, excessive, outdated, incomplete, misleading or unlawfully obtained data and provide for a decision within seven days of the request.
  • Preventing harmful processing: the Act provides a written-notice mechanism where processing causes or is likely to cause unwarranted substantial damage or distress, with a statutory response period.
  • Direct marketing: the Act provides a right to prevent processing for direct marketing in the circumstances set out by law.
  • Automated decisions: where a decision significantly affecting you is based solely on automated processing, Ugandan law provides a mechanism to require reconsideration.
  • Complaints: you may complain to the Personal Data Protection Office if you believe your personal-data rights have been infringed.

How to make a request

  1. Use the relevant MotherHelp privacy request form above. This keeps your request inside MotherHelp rather than relying on an email application.
  2. State the right you want to exercise: access, correction, deletion, objection, consent withdrawal, marketing objection or another privacy concern.
  3. Briefly identify the MotherHelp account, case, donation or interaction involved. Do not email passwords, OTPs, mobile-money PINs or unnecessary identity documents.
  4. MotherHelp may request reasonable information to verify your identity and protect the privacy of other people whose information may be involved.
  5. We will assess the request against applicable law, confidentiality duties, safeguarding requirements, legal retention requirements and the rights of other people.
Beneficiary privacy: if your request concerns a case involving another person, MotherHelp may need to confirm that you are the data subject, authorised representative, parent/guardian or other person legally entitled to make the request. We will not disclose another person's personal information merely because it appears in a case you can view.

External complaint route

If you believe MotherHelp has not properly addressed a data-protection complaint, you can complain to Uganda's Personal Data Protection Office (PDPO). PDPO's published complaint guidance lists its complaint website and [email protected] as complaint channels.

Recommended if the portal does not load: send your complaint directly to [email protected]. You can keep a copy of the email and any response for your records.

PDPO is an external government service. If its website returns a browser or SSL error on your network, MotherHelp cannot repair that external connection; use the official complaint email or phone route instead.

Request verification and response

Privacy requests may involve information about more than one person. MotherHelp may withhold or redact another person's information where disclosure would be unlawful or would unfairly compromise that person's privacy. Requests may also be refused or limited where a lawful exemption or retention obligation applies.
